Meet the Mason
Expert stonemason, Jorge Justel Alonso, delivers a European aesthetic on projects, drawing on methods perfected over centuries in Spain. As a multi-generational family trade, it came naturally to him. Jorge’s father—a restoration stonemason carver—taught him the skills as a young man.
After a period as a semi-professional soccer player, Jorge hung up his cleats and resumed his original profession, first by earning a college certification for stonemasonry. Though he did complete the formal education, instructors had commented he was ready for testing at the start—his father had trained him well.
A country abundant with heritage structures afforded Jorge much restoration experience on millennium-old buildings. With masonry as the most common construction material, he also built modern houses. In this northern region of Spain, winter’s cold climate generated the knowledge needed for his current work in Atlantic Canada.
Having grown up endlessly exploring the mountains around his family home, Jorge’s wanderlust expanded to Canada for its mountains, wilderness and wildlife. When a befriended Canadian ‘pilgrim’ hiking the Camino de Santiago through his beloved Leon Mountains invited him to visit Nova Scotia, he happily accepted.
Spain’s economic crash of 2008 had devastated its job market for many years. With the shortage of stonemasons in Canada, Jorge saw the opportunity to bring his expertise to Nova Scotia.
After working for several local companies on residential, institutional and civic projects, Jorge gained his own clients. Satisfied clients’ referrals led to more projects, which materialized his service business—Nova Euro Stone Masonry.
